On Writing – Useful or Long Lasting? Is there a Conflict?

When I began reading the initial chapters of ‘Write a Useful Book,’ I considered developing something immediately beneficial for my target audience—tech startups, students, and job seekers. The motivation stemmed from addressing the limited availability of useful books for this specific audience.

Upon further reflection, these questions surfaced:

  • What are their reading habits?
  • Do they genuinely prefer books, or are they more inclined towards blog posts?
  • Is video a more effective medium?

Perhaps I should start by selecting one target audience.

As I delved deeper into the book,  I realized that the author advocates for the creation of timeless literature. While not inherently contradictory, an immediately useful book may lack lasting relevance, especially in the fast-paced fields of applied technology.
