Linklog: Big Data

It’s been said that 90 percent of the data that exists today was created in the last two years. That staggering “hockey-stick” growth presents challenges that must be met if we are to gain valuable insight from that data. If there ever was a time to have a big data strategy in place, it’s now!

That is amazing. It is something we need to pay attention to.

  1. This is a very interesting find. Your question is very valid. How I understand is, instead of storing/memorising data or facts, we have to move towards an age of “perception” – How do we “understand” things around us rather than just “knowing” the facts. Though it seems simple, I am not sure how we go about getting a perception of things or events around us.

    1. Thanks Saraswathi. When the data is small, say a few hundred rows in a spreadsheet, we can eye ball it, sort it and make sense of it. When it gets a few thousands, you can probably graph it and aggregate it. What happens with hundreds of thousands or millions of rows of interconnected data? You need to get help from analysis tools. It will be fascinating to watch what new kinds of data driven applications emerge. I was surprised to see more than 16 data scientists jobs at LinkedIn. And almost every one of the companies in Strata conference seem to be hiring. It is clear that statistics, machine learning, Analysis (R) are some of the new skills required. I think certain industries and applications have been doing this for a while. It is getting to be mainstream since the web is bringing us a lot of data (clickstreams, user behavior and aggregated information). not to mention applications like Twitter. All of a sudden there is so much that we can use, if we just know how.
