Dr. Wagner has identified what he calls a “global achievement gap,” which is the leap between what even our best schools are teaching, and the must-have skills of the future:

  • Critical thinking and problem-solving
  • Collaboration across networks and leading by influence
  • Agility and adaptability
  • Initiative and entrepreneurialism
  • Effective oral and written communication
  • Accessing and analyzing information
  • Curiosity and imagination

How do you work on building these skills? No college I know, teaches them yet. How do you embed them into the existing educational system? There are other challenges too? How do you convince teachers, students, parents that you need these skills?

  1. Above all, I believe thr should be a way to gauge those skills. The % gives me the as-is and can work out on how to improvise it. Is thr any existing system to evaluate and work to improve it?

    1. I think there are for some of the skills. I talked to a Prof from Australia a few years ago who told us about how they introduced critical thinking skills gradually over a 4 year engineering course and assessed it. There has been a lot of discussion and emphasis on critical thinking since we get exposed to both facts and opinion mixed and presented together and we need to build the ability to separate them .

  2. While trying to develop these skills, students should remember what Mahatma Gandhi said: “Live as if you were to die tomorrow..Learn as if you were to live forever.”
